BRIEF BACKGROUND

The Scott Asset Management methodology was first published in the late 1970's by Steve Scott while serving as the Pension Investment Manager at the Institutional Investment Division of The Equitable. By 1984 this new exclusive institutional approach became first available to the retail consumers by Mr. Scott through the investment advisory firm he formed Scott, DiNino and Smathers using an external allocation overlay platform in conjunction with five of the largest U.S. based mutual fund families. Twenty eight years later this has become known as OPM (Overlay Portfolio Management).

In 1988 Mr. Scott founded Great Western Financial Advisors (a division of S&P 500 company, Great Western Financial, Inc) as the portfolio management subsidiary. The allocation methodology was internalized and atop the Sierra Trust Funds and the "old" SAM Portfolios* which Mr. Scott also founded.  It became the industry's first mutual fund family ever to offer the combined services of individual portfolio management utilizing a broad spectrum of individual funds outsourced to some of the best portfolio managers in the industry.  The Sierra Trust Funds became the fastest growing mutual fund family in history reaching $25 billion in 8 years.  In 1999 Mr. Scott retired from what had sequentially become the WM Funds (Washington Mutual had acquired Great Western in 1998 and merged the WM Composite Fund Group with Sierra) and formed Scott Investment Advisors, L.P. taking with him the key principals of his management team to advance the work of the SAM Portfolios with their own company.

The Investor Direct

SIA,L.P. provides portfolio management including its six SAM Portfolio and five tax sensitive versions directly to the investor through the secure login portal above. Generally investor who elect this service have investment experience, feel comfortable navigating on a digital platform and are willing to spend some time with the empowerment tools that we provide.  

SIA Services for the Financial Professional 

Our Financial Practitioner community have two separate ways to utilize portfolio management services: 

  • Many financial professionals and/or practitioner firms choose to maintain a traditional relationship between themselves, their clients and third party portfolio managers.  Should a change ever become necessary among any third parties, the financial professional still maintains full control and can execute any change in an efficient manner without distrubing the primary client relationship. This relationship allows Scott Investment Advisors, L.P. to maintain its own branding while distributing the firm's economic and capital market reports. The firm has the option of permitting client access through either their own portal or the one provided by SIA, L.P.

  • Some financial practitioners and their firms including those specializing in the management of CFO's (Corporate Family Officies) choose to establish their own branding and be more actively engaged in all aspects of portfolio management. Scott Investment Advisors, L.P. provides these firms a licensing agreement in which SIA's economic and capital market insights, security listings and allocation formats are delivered to operating platform of the financial practitioner or their firm. The firm may choose to integrate all or a portion of the investment services provided by SIA, L.P. into their platform. Thus SIA, L.P. may become a component of a broader more comprehensive execution platform of multi-products and managers fully utilized by the firm.

SIA, L.P. provides its full array of services to institutional investors including mutual funds, brokerage firms, corporate 401K plans, trust companies and pension plans. We also provide consulting services for custom applications and engagements.


*  The "old" SAM Portfolios were created by Great Western Financial Advisors (subsequentially Sierra Investment Advisors, Inc) founded by Mr. Scott in 1988. This firm managed the Sierra Trust Fund Family of Funds launched in 1990 which he also co-founded. The Sierra Asset Management Portfoios (SAM) have enjoyed one of the longest most successful track records among asset allocation funds within a single mutual fund family in the industry. Today the "old" SAM Portfolios are the signature Strategic Allocation Portfolios of the Principal Group of Funds.
